Description
The Assistant Nurse Manager assists with, facilitates, and communicates the patient\u2019s plan of care to members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team.  Also assists with human resource management activities, such as staff scheduling, staff development, and performance monitoring.  Is accountable for management of the division on a 24-hour basis.  Functions as manager in the absence of the Nurse Manager.  Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission and values.

Principle Accountabilities:                                                                                                % of  Time Spent
 
1.  Assists with human resource management:  25%     A.  Staff Scheduling:  ensuring 24-hour coverage appropriate to patient care needs, assuring that the quality and quantity of
          staffing ratios are equitable.
     B.  Staff Development:  consulting with Dept. of Education and preceptors about learning needs
         of staff, and arranging for those needs to be met; sharing relevant nursing literature or  
         contemporary issues of nursing practice; participating in the planning of unit-specific
         competency and competency validation programs and continuing to develop the
         Charge Nurse role.
    C.  Performance Monitoring:  assists with conducting performance evaluations and counseling
         for all staff; assists team members in setting short and/or long-term goals; assists with the
         disciplinary process of individual staff.
    D.  Recruitment/Hiring:  assists with recruitment activities, assists/conducts interview with potential
         new hires.
    E.  Role model for FACES culture, ensuring employees have adequate training and display FACES
         culture expectations.
 
2.  Supports organizational goals for patient and employee satisfaction.   20%                                                      A.    Shares results of patient satisfaction surveys with employees, action plans are discussed.
     B.    Participates/ensures that daily patient rounds are completed.
     C.    Participates/ensures that discharge calls are made.
     E.    Performs daily rounding on employees, utilizing information to foster division
            improvements.     
 
3.   Responsible for Quality Improvement activities, unit-based and department-wide.      20%                                                     
      A.   Documents pertinent information in the medical records and reviews patient records to ensure
            proper documentation by other members of the healthcare team.                                           
      B.   Participates on committee work, unit based and organizational.      
                                                                                      
4.    Functions in the role of charge nurse/clinical staff.  20%                                                               
      A.   Communicates with patient, family, and staff regarding plan of care.                        
      B.   Maintains ongoing communication with patient and/or family regarding current status.
      C.   Evaluates patient\u2019s progress towards the achievement of expected outcomes.
      D.   Makes rounds with physicians as needed.
      E.   May serve as an educator to staff or a resource for patient education.
 
5.   Promotes a safe environment by utilizing safety practices as established for unit and hospital-wide   application.  10%     
      A.   Overseeing that hospital policy on handling and disposal of hazardous materials and infectious    waste is carefully followed.
      B.   Reviewing and utilizing incident reports appropriately, encourage use of \u201cQuantros\u201d Reporting System.
      C.   Overseeing that safety measures are carried out to prevent patients from harming themselves or others, i.e. Standards for
            Restraints, Side rails, Transportation, Suicide Prevention, etc.
      D.   Notifying Nurse Manager of problems, which may need to be reported to Risk Management.
      F.   Supervises and adheres to the concepts of infection control by complying with standards for   universal precautions
      G.   Recognizes safety hazards and acts to protect patient/self, i.e. Standards for Electrical Safety, Equipment, Maintenance, etc. 
      H.   Assumes responsibility for maintenance and proper functioning of equipment.
      I.    Demonstrates that he/she is familiar with and knowledgeable of location, care, and operation  of emergency  
             equipment.                                                                       
      J.    Adheres to Hospital/Department/Unit Standards for:
            1.  Fire reporting/drills.            2. Disaster reporting/drills.            3. Tornado protective measures.
            4. Bomb threats.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   
 6.  Assist with Financial management:       4%                                                                                              
            A.  Ensures unit staffing to acuity.
            B.  Ensures proper utilization of supplies.
            C.  Assist in implementing cost saving measures.
 
7.  Performs other work duties as assigned.  1%
Education
Bachelors degree in Nursing required.
License - Certification - Registration (Text Only)Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Missouri.
Experience
Clinical base for the patient population served. Two years current experience in the clinical field specialty preferred.
Previous management experience preferred.
Problem-solving skills.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Promotes and provides courteous and effective communication with internal and external customers.
The patient care provider will take into consideration the specific age-related needs of the patient. Nursing division may provide care to neonates/infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric adults.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification within 1 year for ICU.
Certification in Neonatal Resuscitation Program for Maternity and Newborn Services, Pediatrics.
Current certification in a Basic Life Support required or course will need to be completed during orientation classes, prior to working on the nursing divisions.

COMPETENCY WILL BE VALIDATED AT LEAST ONCE EVERY THREE YEARS. STANDARDS DENOTING AN ANNUAL OR MORE FREQUENT COMPETENCY VALIDATION ARE LOCATED IN THE SCOPE OF PRACTICE. COMPLETION OF HOSPITAL SAFETY PROGRAMS ARE REQUIRED ANNUALLY. PARTICIPATION IN A BLS, IS REQUIRED EVERY TWO YEARS.
